Knightswood No.9 Pit

Both blackband and the Garibaldi clayband ironstone seams worked, with the No.9 shaft (probably buried under back garden of Pikeman Rd) being relatively centrally located over a wide area of longwall workings in blackband with NW & SE extremities at [NS 5297 6923] (under SW corner of Glasgow BMX centre) and [NS 5389 6907] (Saxon Rd), respectively; ca. 930m apart. Survey dates on abandonment plan for blackband workings (see refs) range from 1868-1878.

Approx. 60m to the N of the No.9 shaft was that of Knightswood No.2 Pit (coal).

Alternative Names: None recorded.

Notes: AP states 46 fms [84m] to blackband ironstone, and 'Mine from Garibaldi to B.Band' suggests that the Garibaldi clayband seam was also worked at a lower level, in which case the shaft was probably deeper than 84m. Given coordinates derived from BGS GeoIndex.
