Mine (Fireclay), 20th Century.
Extensive pillar-and-stall mine complex in Upper Leaf fireclay seam, conjoining with works of the original Damhead Mine to the W. The No.2 / Dunsyston workings extended as far E as approx [NS 7946 6275], with numerous adit entrances along the N bank of the Shotts Burn. See abandonment plan (in refs) for detailed complex layout. This mine has two large entrances* into the higher workings behind a brick building.
Alternative Names: Dunsyston Mine, Wester Dunsyston Mine
Notes: Operated by Bonnybridge Silica & Fireclay Co. and closed in 1966. The earliest part of this eastern Damhead complex was referred to as Dunsyston Mine and was abandoned in 1948. The main Dunsyston Mine mouth may have been reused to reach additional 'No.2' areas.
Given coordinates are for the main adit marked "Damhead No.2 Mine Mouth" on the 1966 AP. This same mouth is part of Dunsyston Mine on the 1948 AP.
Probably 'Wester Dunsyston Mine' (fireclay) that was originally owned by Burnside Coal Co. (as were the Damhead & Hyndfield mines).
*The Damhead Mines have a number of timber supports & are unstable in numerous places. Those inexperienced with regards to mine exploration are strongly discouraged from entering.
