Mine (Fireclay), 20th Century.
Extensive mine complex comprising separate sections, with levels in Upper & Lower Leaf fireclay seams. The Upper Leaf (6-8.5 ft thick) workings were connected to those of the eventual Damhead No.2 Mine, whilst Damhead No.1 (through Lower Leaf) extended below the original upper leaf workings. See abandonment plan (in refs) for detailed complex layout.
The original entrance / workings (Damhead Mine) were located close to a dam near the E bank of the Shotts Burn at approx. [NS 7896 6261] before being abandoned in 1927 and probably becoming conjoined with later workings operated from the Damhead No.2 Mine Mouth.
Alternative Names: Chapelhall Mine
Notes: Original section was abandoned in 1927. Wider complex operated by Bonnybridge Silica & Fireclay Co. and closed in 1966.
The 1966 abandonment plan for the Lower Leaf workings gives the name of the SW section as Damhead Mine, although this term is used for the original section (at given coords) on the older 1927 AP.
