Darn Bay Cave 1

A just supratidal rift cave facing SSE from a promontory just SW of the Pintill Stone. This promontory is taken to be the NE end of Darn Bay. It has a small upper entrance over and behind a wedged block. the entrance width is 3 m.

Notes: Access: by land - walking across fields to NO 8489 7380; along the cliff NE to NO 85095 73925 and then down the cliff and SW along the beach. The tide level needs to be less than 2.3 m ACD to get around the promontory.

The BGS bedrock geology overlay has this as Rob's Cove Conglomerate member, which is at the top of the Gourdon Sandstone Formation.

Photo 1 entrance in context. Rather hard to see - but follow the tide line from the left until it reaches the promontory. Then look at photo 2. 11/10/25.

Photo 3 the entrance is in the middle, and immediately above the beach. The rift is a continuation of the west side of the promontory and may be a little displaced (faulted). 22/12/21.
Photo 4 looking about NE at the Pintill Stone and the promontory - which is probably the NE end of Darn Bay. Taken on 24/11/21 when the tide was too high to allow access to Darn Bay beach without getting wet feet. This cave is marked 'cave 1' and is just out of sight.
