Dickmont's Den Cave (Lower SW entrance)

Upper intertidal lower west entrance to Dickmont's Den sea cave from the rock foreshore at the base of a shingle slope.

Width = 1.0 m, floor to crown height 7.1 m. The SW tunnel is 18 m to where the other tunnels join.

by sea: at high tide - may just be kayak navigable in low swell. Light from this entrance can be seen on the left if you paddle in via the E entrance (qv).

Photo 1 shows both west entrances to this cave in context. Note the tide line is where the red sandstone colour turns greeny-black. Taken from the SW side of the Den, about 1/3 of the way from its head.
Photo 2 looking up from the rocky foreshore. Note that the sill appears to below the barnacle line ie often covered at high tide.

Photo 5 looking inward along the rift tunnel. The bridging rocks are clearly well covered at high tide. On 10 Sep 21 it looked as though the first two bridging rocks could be crawled under (hands & knees) but this was not attempted. Light from the E sea entrance could just be made out.
