Ironstone Pit (19th Century). Formerly at least 26 m deep, but now buried below grassland on S margin of (disused) opencast coal mine/landfill ste. Some landscape remediation (patchy grass and scrubby trees) but still bleak.
Alternative Names: None recorded.
Notes: Shown as 'Old Ironstone Pit' on 1864 OS 6" map, but 'absent' (shown as small square - unnamed) on 1914 edition. 25" OS map of 1896 places a small square enclosure at NS 78970 68806.
Given coordinates based on pit shaft marking shown on Geological Survey 6" map (14 fathoms [26 m] to ironstone).
