Crosscut trial (for lead ore), 18th c.

Located up the W slope of Glenglass, this locality is consistent with a ca. 330m-long W-trending cross-cut trial shown on Mine Plan SP1805, named "Laurie's Insett" on Wells' map of 1756. The BGS 1:10k map places the site downhill to the E at [NS 86284 13175], in which case the adit mouth would be buried below the thick spoil mound.

Alternative Names: Glenglass Trial, Laurie's Insett

Notes: Top of tip assessed by I. Greig, March 2026. A small stream was seen resurging from a small hole at the head of the tip. Labelled as shaft on OS map.

This does not appear to be associated with the New Glencrieff Vein, although subordinate veins within the spur are known (e.g. Baxter's Vein), based on mine plans from the West Glencrieff Pit.

A mine inset is a horizontal, reinforced tunnel or opening leading off a shaft, serving as the main access point to an underground mining level.
