Adit mouth (buried), early- or mid-18th c.

Site of portal at the given coordinates, now buried below pasture. Formerly provided access to the High Adit of the New Glencrieff Mine's western branch. The adit mouth was fed by an aqueduct that crossed the Wanlock Water from the Bay Adit [site #10092] source with joined waters from Mills & Glenglass Burns (& "thence in a close drift to the engine") according to 1756 map key.

The initially-straight tunnel extends SE to a point beside Lorimer's Shaft [site #10086], via the inclined Winding Shaft [site #1117]. The High Adit was further connected to the surface by three shafts (probably also now-blocked) towards its SE end where a number of spoil tips are visible at surface.

See 'New Glencrieff Mine (West Glencrieff Pit)' [site #1117] for further info.

Alternative Names: None recorded.

Notes: Location determined by re-scaling abandonment plan AP11450.3 that shows the path (ca. 800ft long) & name of the 'High Adit'. Mine Plan SP1805 confirms that the NW end was a portal.

Wells' 1756 map states: a close drift. Water from Whytes Cleugh Level carried here with joined waters from Mills & Glenglass Burns.
