Fenced-off shaft, probably associated with the underlying Mennockhass Water Tunnel, or a dead-end short side-passage that branches off from the aqueduct [site #9535] at this point. It is possible that this side-passage was a trial driven from the aqueduct tunnel that passed through the lead-rich Margaret's Vein.

See 'Mennockhass Water Tunnel' [site #9535]

Alternative Names: None recorded.

Notes: Labelled as 'Old Shaft' on E side of track on OS map of 1899. Water Tunnel path shown on mine plan for Margaret's Vein (SP1771) that only shows a short offshoot of the water tunnel at this locality; cf. access shaft.

Separate site to the adjacent lead trial [site #1010]

Hydrographic Feeds: Mossy Burn reservoir

Hydrographic Resurgences: Wanlock Water
