Mine shaft (Lead).

Sunk to a short level that followed the Margaret's Vein. A blind shaft joined this level to the underlying 'Adit Level' (aka 'Low Level') passage that connected the Straitsteps & Margarets mine workings. The (Old) Waygate Shaft is probably blocked / buried to the rear of Mitchell Place.

"Waygate Shaft is at the southern end of the [Straitstep] vein about at its junction with Lochnell Vein. Straitstep vein (also called Margarets vein, and Whytes Cleuch Vein) courses approximately NNW-SSE for about 1 mile. Straitstep vein was also developed from the Bay Mine shaft. The dump at Waygate shaft in 1987 produced the best examples of Veszelyite in the UK." [Mindat]

Alternative Names: Waygate Shaft

Notes: Not be confused with the Waygate Shaft at Glengonnar, Leadhills.
