Mine (Lead).

Site of crosscut adit portal, buried/blocked in the N bank of the Wanlock Water opposite the site of a trial [site #10121]. The NE-trending crosscut was driven through the Belton Grain Vein, probably meeting the perpendicular Lorimers Level after almost 300m. An additional mouth to this cross-cut was located ca. 50m further E of the W portal at [NS 87645 13020].

See 'Belton Grain Mine (Engine Shaft)' [site #10135] for background info.

Alternative Names: Townhead Main Level

Notes: Given coordinates to 8 fig NGR. Referred to as 'Belton Grain Level' on Wells' 1756 map. History of Sanquhar book states that the "mouth of the Townhead main level" is located near to the point that Crawford's Vein crosses the Wanlock Burn.
