Mine adit, probably an 18th c. trial.
Portal buried beside path on SW flank of Wanlock Dod (hill), nr Whyte's Cleugh. Based on the mine plan (SP1751), the length of the ENE-trending level is c. 130m, almost reaching the Straitsteps Mine workings (of the Straitstep-Bay Vein). BGS map suggests that this crosscut tunnel would have been driven into the Old Glencrieff Vein & then passed through the Weir's Vein to the Straitstep-Bay.
"[Weir's] vein lies about 50 fms east of the Old Glencrieff. It was discovered by the Friendly Mining Society when driving the Whyte's Cleugh Level, and was opened up for a few fathoms." [Wilson, 1921]
"In 1691, Matthew Wilson obtained a lease until 1710, and successfully worked Margaret's vein (also know as Straitsteps)... After the end of the lease, the London Lead Company took over the Wanlockhead mining grounds... In 1723 the London lead Company took out a 'forced' new joint lease with the Friendly Mining Society, but the partnership was dissolved after 6 years. The Friendly Mining Society continued to operate until 1735, but its success was limited and records show that it operated at a loss." [Mine Explorer]
Alternative Names: Dod Crosscut, Whyte's Cleugh Level
Notes: Shown as 'Old Level' beside upper trackway on OS map of 1899 (unlabelled on 1863 6" Ed.). BGS map places it slightly further upslope at ~[NS 86746 13433].
Named 'Dod Water Crosscut' & 'Dod Crosscut' on Mine Plans SP1827 & SP1771, respectively. This is possibly the Whyte's Cleugh Level mentioned by Wilson (1921).
