Mine shaft, abandoned.
Obvious fenced-off crater at given coordinates, representing a (probably infilled) buried shaft associated with the 'Old Glencrieff Vein'. This is located adjacent to the remains of a dismantled tramway (now a pathway) on its S side, and is surrounded by waste spoil material seen in the S bank of the Wanlock Water.
Mine plan (SP1751) suggests a linear passage ran SSE from under the junction (of track up to New Glencrieff Mine) at [NS 86780 13271], passing through the spur that forms the E side of Glencrieff. It also shows a passage trending E from this locality, linking with the Straitsteps Mine workings. Additional spoil mounds are located on the S side of the tramway at the base of this spur, potentially reflecting parallel tunnels along the old vein.
Alternative Names: Glencrieff Mine
Notes: The Old Glencrieff Vein generally runs NNW-SSE through the spur separating Glencrieff & Mennock Hass, & its N end partially through the W flank of Wanlock Dod hill just behind the cottages of Bryson Terrace.
Not to be confused with the separate workings of the New Glencrieff Mine, which followed the more westerly New Glencrieff Vein.
