"This vein [Weir's Vein] lies about 50 fms. east of the Old Glencrieff. It was discovered by the Friendly Mining Society when driving the Whyte's Cleugh Level, and was opened up for a few fathoms. In the new 160-fm. cross-cut two veins have been cut at about the position of Weir's Vein: both of them carried a little galena." [Wilson, 1920]

Alternative Names: None recorded.

Notes: Labelled as 'Old Shaft' on OS 25" map of 1899, close to outcrop of Weir's Vein as shown on BGS map. However, no horizontal passage is noted at this locality on area Mine Plan (SP1751), suggestive of an abandoned shaft. Potentially an attempt to reach the Straitstep Vein.

Given name generic, relation to Weir's Vein tentative.
